On top of that he has the best design, the best voice acting (watch the series in French, not only because that version is better in general but also because Nox’s desperate cackle in the French version is replaced with a much less interesting performance in the English dub), and the ending is only written well from Nox’s perspective. The show works better if you consider Nox the main character, and in a sense he is, because many of season one’s “necessary” episodes involve the Xelor. Which of course begs the question: Who plotted the Nox storyline and why wasn’t he or she in charge of everything else? He’s an exceptionally sympathetic villain and the conclusion of his story arc is crushingly ironic, being one of the few unexpected plot twists in the show. For the next two centuries he collects Wakfu (the in-universe name for life energy) to gain the power necessary to do this, rationalizing all his atrocities by saying that, if he succeeds, none of them will have happened, which not only serves to highlight his twisted thought process but also makes a lot of sense. Upon hearing that his wife and children had died due to a natural disaster, Nox falls apart and decides to turn back time in order to correct his mistakes. Noximilien Coxen AKA Nox was a clockmaker who stumbled across a strange device known as an Eliacube that he fell under the influence of and became obsessed with to the point of neglecting his family, who eventually left him. More effort went into this one character than the rest of the show. No, the reason why I decided to watch Wakfu all the way through was because of the aforementioned time wizard (or Xelor, as they are known in universe), who is hands down the single best thing about the series, being the repository for every last one of the writers’ interesting ideas. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, for example, is more over-the-top, funnier, exciting, and quotable than Wakfu, so if you would like to watch a popcorn show that would be on average a better choice. The saving grace really is the 20-minute episode length, which means it can be consumed relatively quickly, and even then there are better shows to watch. It’s not funny either, though that doesn’t stop it from trying.

The plot isn’t new or particularly strange, which creates a substantial problem for the show, namely that it’s predictable and not particularly exciting. If this sounds clichéd it’s because, well, it is. Thus begins a journey to uncover Yugo’s true parentage, a rather modest adventure that eventually evolves into something a bit grander. One day he discovers he has the power to make portals, an event which conveniently coincides with an attack on his village by a time wizard named Nox and the arrival of a few other adventurers. Wakfu is the story of Yugo, a boy entrusted to an ex-bounty hunter by a dragon who claims that the fate of the world depends on him. At best it’s a fairly amusing (and well animated) distraction with a couple of interesting ideas, none of which are apparent at first, but more on that later. It has some decent moments but the average episodes range from vaguely amusing to exasperating, though in all the fairness the former is more common and the show rarely displays total incompetence, never stooping that low during the episodes which are necessary for the story. Let’s get this out of the way right now: Wakfu isn’t good. Jeffrey Sinclair, or one of the major issues with B5 season 1.
